I am wrapping up my focus on the Peace Prayer that is often attributed to St. Francis that I have been focusing on this month.  One petition says, “Where there is sadness, let me sow joy.” In this petition, we we are reminded that we can play an important role in alleviating the suffering of those around us.

Jesus modeled for us what it means to care for others. He healed the sick. He brought the dead back to life. He washed the feet of his disciples. And we are called to do what we can to also bring joy and care to others.

I have a friend who is in the Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Engineering Center at Marquette University. He has spent his career with his colleagues obtaining grants to bring healing to those previously without hope. The work of these dedicated professionals has created gait analysis clinics in places like Mumbai, Manila, and Mexico City. This team has also created the Go Baby Bo! Program that focuses on offering children with limited mobility access to toys tailored to their needs. I love the outcome of these programs. I also am so happy about the inclusion of many volunteers to build the toys that help these children. High school students often take part in the events to adapt items to the needs of children who otherwise could not experience these toys. That is sowing joy where there is sadness.

May you be given the gift of being able to have an impact on the life of another. May you bring joy in moments of sadness in your care for their needs. It is a lovely petition to strive to meet.

Blessed Angela: “Towards the sick they should show patience and care; they should console them, bear with them patiently, take care of their needs.”
