Solidarity with the Poor

Written by Barb Spies, OFS, FV Mission Director

Ensuring the needs of the poor and vulnerable are met through advocacy and action.

On August 8, 2023, a wildfire broke out on the island of Maui. The fire devastated portions of western Maui. The loss of life and property has been grave, with the numbers of dead rising each day as the search through the rubble continues. Lahaina was destroyed: houses, apartments, businesses. I heard an interview from someone who survived the deadly Camp Fire in California in 2018. She noted that cash donations are so important at this time. The people need help with their daily food needs, replacing clothing and other items, and living arrangements until they can decide what to do next. Catholic Charities Hawaii is working to get resources and aid to those affected by the fire. They have a donation button on their website.

St. Felix, a Capuchin Franciscan Friar was an inspiration for Blessed Angela. He begged for alms and trusted in God’s providence. He was known to receive gifts of bread and share it with those in need. Likewise, Blessed Angela saw the needs of those in her community and offered service and support. She provided housing and food for widows and orphans, also giving an education to the children. May we, like St. Felix and Blessed Angela, see the needs of those around us and give what we can to help.
