Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to hear Br. Roberto Pasolini, OFM Cap., the Preacher to the Papal Household. As he began his talk, he spoke about his conversion, his return to the faith. He noted that a paper he was reading during his commute had a reprint of the Gospel according to Matthew. He started to read and was moved to tears by the Beatitudes. He said he was finally ready that day to listen to the Gospel and that he knew what it meant to be poor in spirit. As Jesus spoke directly to his heart through these words, he went back to his parish and rediscovered the sacraments.

After he had graduated from the university where he studied computer science and AI, his heart was ready for a different future. He came across another book, one that had the writings of St. Francis. He sought out the Capuchins in Milan and became a Franciscan friar. He was incredibly humbled a couple of years ago to be asked to be considered for the role of Preacher to the Papal Household, a role that goes to a Capuchin. He was stunned, but he trusted God. When he was chosen, he just tried to breathe! What a privilege to preach in this setting! He was also absolutely terrified on his first day of preaching there. He said his mouth was dry as a desert and his glass of water was shaking. He offered a blessing, “May the Lord give you peace, and maybe a little to me too!”

Br. Roberto noted that he continues to trust in God’s providence in this role that he has accepted. He said that we pray before God, and “if I am not afraid to speak before God, why be nervous before his servants?” Pope Francis supported him kindly and said, “stay yourself.” When asked about what moves him when he listens to a preacher, he said that it is touching when it is sincere, when the preacher is humble. He also noted that Pope Leo is balanced, that he is humble and wise.

Br. Roberto accepts the challenge to announce the Gospel in a polarized world. He notes that we are all asked to construct the church of the future, that we should remain brave and stay in the footsteps of Jesus. Trusting God allows us to be a spiritual power in the world.
